NUC lambasts varsities over insufficient research works

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has lambasted universities in the country for not doing enough to assist government with research works to tackle the present economic challenges.
NUC’s Director of Research and Innovation, Dr Suleiman Ramon Yusuf, made this known recently during a two - day retreat organised by the Department of Consultancy Services of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai, Niger State.
Yusuf who spoke on the topic, “ Attaining Excellence and Efficiency in a University - the Regulatory Agency Perspective”, said that universities in developing countries, though constrained by poor resources, have to live up to peoples’ expectations.
He urged universities to be strategic by reconsidering their mission, vision, functions and structures as veritable engine for economic development and social regeneration.
The Vice Chancellor of IBBU, Professor Muhammad Nasir Maiturare in his remarks, described as unfortunate the situation whereby universities only focus on their local environment instead of having a global vision.
A presentation of structural design by the Ahmadu Bello University Consultancy Nigeria Limited, Zaria, for the proposed IBBU Lapai Medical College was displayed at the two-day retreat.
The preliminary presentation was to enhance the work of the committee earlier set up by the Niger State government so that all stakeholders can do proper assessment of the design and come up with useful suggestions that would actualise the dream of a medical college in Niger state.
